Pittsburgh Riverhounds 1 – 0 New York City FC

Huzzah! We finally have an upset! The sides looked evenly matched, trading shots and saves for the first 77 minutes. Then came the twist. Center defender Strahinja Tanasijevic got his pocket picked by Bradley Semple, then brought him down. As the last man, the referee reached for the red card. Even with 10 men, NYCFC had the better chances: Johnathan Shore struck the post (81), Mounsef Barker missed wide (84) and Julián Fernández whiffed a sitter (86). But in the 96th minute, off the last corner kick of the game, Roberto Ydrach delivered a brilliant header to send the crowd into raucous celebration. A clutch goal.

Louisville City FC 0 – 1 Minnesota United FC

My goodness what a tie this was. Possession was an even 50%, and only two shots on goal were recorded for both sides. But LouCity took fifteen total to Minnesota’s six, which speaks to a paucity of skilled finishers in the purple and white. The game winner was scored by 17-year old Darius Randell, making his first team debut. That’s one hell of a memory.

Philadelphia Union 1 (5) – 1 (4) Indy Eleven

They certainly went the distance in this one, giving the 8,600+ plus fans in Subaru Park their moneys worth. Indy’s Elvis Amoh scored his third goal in seven days to put the game on level terms. In the ensuing penalty shootout it was the normally reliable Aodhan Quinn who missed, sending the Union to the next round.

Rhode Island FC 1 – 2 New England Revolution

This was the second match hosted by Rhode Island in their new stadium, and a buoyant crowd of 9,500+ came in to cheer on the Anchors. It was all New England, though, as they peppered keeper Jackson Lee with a pair of shots early. The third was the charm, however, coming off a lucky deflection that fell to Tomás Chancalay, whose swift hit went through Lee’s legs and into the goal. Bur Rhode Island emerged from the dressing room with renewed vigor, and equalized in the 50th minute off a lovely strike from Maxi Rodriguez. That was the first RIFC goal scored in the Centreville Bank Stadium. The Revs’ second goal was a bit of fluke. A harmless seeming cross from Gevork Diarbian seemed to catch some wind and bounce off the crossbar straight to Cristiano Olivera, who had an easy tap-in. A tough blow to RIFC.

Tampa Bay Rowdies 0 – 5 Orlando City SC

And roll over them with impunity they did. What a scoreline. Outside of a single game in the first round this was the most lopsided result in the competition so far.

Chicago Fire FC 4 – 0 Detroit City FC

You’ll not see a better example of whistle to whistle dominance than this game. Chicago’s Belgian goal-machine Hugo Cuypers scored in the 4th minute to set the tone. Detroit City’s leading goal scorer Darren Smith unfortunately put one in his own net a half-hour later. Two more in the second half followed. Detroit could only muster five total shots with 40% possession, and if their keeper Carlos Saldaña hadn’t been so sharp (he recorded five saves) the score could’ve been worse.

FC Dallas 3 – 1 AV Alta FC

From a statistical view, AV Alta was the slightly better team. But statistics don’t rattle nets, and in the key metric of goals FC Dallas was the clear winner. They only took five total shots, but three went in, including a Luciano Acosta shocking in the third minute.

St. Louis CITY SC 2 – 0 Union Omaha

This was an ass-whooping by St. Louis CITY. Omaha couldn’t offer much to counter to the host’s superior possession and offense. They outshot the Owls 24 to 8, and Omaha’s keeper Rashid Nuhu did well to stop seven attempts. CITY’s Joseph Zalinsky finally broke through in the 68th for his first goal of 2025. João Klauss clinched it in the 87th.

Austin FC 3 – 2 El Paso Locomotive FC

Despite some defensive lapses that gave Austin some good looks (all of which came to nought), the first half was all El Paso. A 19th minute goal was called back for offsides, but Robert Avila struck less than a minute later for Los Locos. He would add a second fifteen minutes later, and the visitors appeared to have the proverbial bull by the horns.

But Brandon Vázquez finally found his shooting form. He’d missed twice in the first half, but when given the chance in the 72nd did not miss. Austin would go on to snatch another two goals, making it three in the span of seven minutes. A gutting loss for El Paso; much needed jubilation for the home side.

Phoenix Rising FC 1 – 4 Houston Dynamo FC

Felipe De Andrade scored on his Dynamo debut in the 17th minute, having been called up to the first team that morning. But a Phoenix equalizer from Dariusz Formella just before halftime brought the two level. Going into extra time, it looked unlikely that Phoenix would last. Houston had been pressuring all game, and in the 99th minute Jack McGlynn found the net. Houston never looked back, adding another two insurance goals before the final whistle.

San Jose Earthquakes 2 – 1 Sacramento Republic FC

Don’t be fooled, this game was all Quakes. Sacramento even had a man advantage for the final 17 minutes of regulation, but couldn’t produce anything other than a 95th minute consolation goal. San Jose took 17 shots, but only four on target.
