Federico Valverde experienced a milestone moment in his career when he captained Real Madrid for the first time in an official match during their 3-0 victory over Leganes.

The Uruguayan midfielder not only led his team but also contributed significantly by scoring a brilliant second goal from a free kick, showcasing his versatility and determination.

Valverde’s debut as captain was a deeply personal achievement for him. Although his family in Uruguay could not attend, he expressed immense gratitude for their unwavering support throughout his journey.

“I’m very happy to fulfil another dream at this club. My wife was here today. I would have loved for my children to be here, for my parents to be here, who were always there for me throughout this whole career,” he began saying.

Interestingly, Valverde played as a right-back in this match, a position outside his comfort zone. He embraced the challenge, crediting his preparation through studying his teammates like Lucas Vazquez and Dani Carvajal.

“I really enjoyed the position today. I am available for whatever the coach wants, and whatever the team needs. I tried to watch a lot of videos, a lot of games of my other teammates, of Lucas, of Carvajal.

“Obviously, I am not even close to them but I try to give my best in that position and I try to help the team.”

Looking forward to Liverpool

Looking ahead, Valverde is prepared for the challenge of facing Liverpool at Anfield in the Champions League.

Reflecting on his past experience in 2021, where he played as a makeshift right-back against Liverpool, Valverde described it as one of the most challenging matches of his career.

“I had to play as a full-back, above all, I was very nervous. For me, it was one of the most difficult games of my life.

“It was my first time playing as a full-back, against a very difficult opponent, Sadio Mane. I did well, obviously, everything was easier, without people, without their people.”

With Liverpool’s attacking prowess, the task will undoubtedly be tougher this time, but Valverde and his teammates are ready for the battle.

Dani Ceballos speaks

Meanwhile, Dani Ceballos praised Valverde’s contribution and leadership, describing him as “an inspiration for the squad”.

According to Ceballos, Valverde’s work ethic and consistency make him a role model for others, highlighting his progression from the youth ranks to becoming a cornerstone of the European champions.

“I would like to congratulate him on his first game as captain of this club. It won’t be his last. He is a player who comes from the youth system and has worked quietly for many years.

“It doesn’t matter where he plays, he always delivers and plays great games. He is a source of inspiration for all of us,” said the midfielder.

Ceballos also reflected on the team’s performance against Leganes, noting significant improvement since the season’s shaky start.

The victory, he explained, came after a challenging period of adjustment following the international break. The team has grown more cohesive, with a stronger defensive foundation evident in their recent results.

“We needed a little time to get to know each other better. It was a difficult match because we had little time together after the national team match. The team is becoming more solid, working better defensively and it shows in the results.”

Having made his first start since recovering from an injury earlier in the season, Ceballos expressed satisfaction with his progress.

He emphasised his determination to make the most of every opportunity, showing his readiness to contribute to the team’s success moving forward.

“I have been working for quite some time after the injury on matchday 4. I feel very good and I am making the most of the minutes,” he noted.

Real Madrid’s collective effort and individual resilience continue to set the tone for their campaign, with players like Valverde and Ceballos stepping up in critical moments.
