Bochum, the Bundesliga’s last-placed side – now threatening to climb out of the cellar – target two new reinforcements in their quest to avoid relegation from the German top flight. VfL Wolfsburg striker Kevin Behrens and Borussia Dortmund midfielder Kjell Wätjen appear to be on the Ruhr club’s radar.

Ruhr Nachrichten claims that Bochum aim to procure Wätjen from their Ruhrpott neighbours on loan. The 18-year-old has mostly featured for the Dortmund reserves in the 3. Liga this season, making only two brief relief appearances for Nuri Sahin’s first team.

Wätjen nevertheless did impress in a surprise start under Edin Terzic on match-day 32 last year. The youngster earned special praise from his head-coach and BVB sporting director Sebastian Kehl after registering an assist in the 5-1 win over Augsburg.

Bochum’s interest in Behrens is reported by the local Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung. The 33-year-old has become something of a pariah at Germany’s green company team after a public scandal in which he declined to sign a rainbow-themed tricot for a charity auction.

Behrens – who was once called up to the German national team by Julian Nagelsmann – does still bring with him the experience of 16 top-flight goals during his time with Wolfsburg and 1. FC Union Berlin. Bremen, per Sky Germany, are reportedly also interested in him.

Sky casts doubt on a possible Behrens move to Bochum, as much as die Wölfe would like to cash in on him prior to the expiration of his contract. Instead, there’s talk of the Revierclub reviving their interest in Greek striker Georgios Masouras.

The previous VfL administrative team helmed by Marc Lettau saw several potential deals for the Olympiacos man fall through over the summer. Current Bochum top administrator Ilja Känzig ostensibly opens up old lines of communication on this front.
