Chelsea face Copenhagen in the Conference League on Thursday night, the first time the Blues have faced the Danish side since 2011.

Back then we were in the Champions League, and among the favourites to win it. Nicolas Anelka grabbed both goals to see off Copenhagen and put us into the Quarter Finals where we faced (and lost to) Manchester United.

Just imagine that you’ve got Nicolas Anelka, Didier Drogba AND Fernando Torres all in your squad. Now we’ve got just one senior striker – and he’s injured.

Ultimately we would go out against Fergie’s Man U, and Carlo Ancelotti would pay the price by losing his job at the end of the season. Just imagine how high standards were back then that losing to the eventual finalists was enough to get you the boot. These days it’s a success if we just qualify for Europe’s top competition.

You can see the goals in the clip embedded here:

Lampard’s pass the highlight of Chelsea win

Lampard receives the ball on the half turn before setting up Nicolas Anelka’s second goal.

The Anelka runs and finishes are nice (although the first one is rather lucky to sneak in right through the keeper), but what we really noticed from these clips was the Frank Lampard assist for the second.

Known more, of course, for scoring himself, Lampard’s creativity and passing in the final third remains criminally underrated by non-Blues fans. In this case he showed off his legendary “scanning” skills by knowing Anelka was running off his blindside. The midfielder pulled off a left footed reverse pass which caught the defence out and put Anelka through.

The angle was growing tighter, but the Frenchman showed his customary cool and finishing skill to hit it back across goal and seal the tie for the Blues.
