Villarreal star Pape Gueye has admitted that he backed away from a potential duel with Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal during the recent meeting between the sides.

Barca and Villarreal, of course, locked horns this past weekend.

As part of the penultimate gameweek of the La Liga season, the former welcomed the Yellow Submarine to Catalunya’s capital, with the title already wrapped up.

The aforementioned Lamine, meanwhile, featured from the off in the clash, from his customary berth on the right flank.

And en route to an eventual 3-2 Barcelona defeat, the 17-year-old dazzled once more.

Lamine was in nothing short of irresistible form at Montjuïc, terrorising the visitors’ backline, as well as netting a gorgeous left-footed goal from outside the penalty area.

And one individual on whom such brilliance was evidenly not at all lost was the aforementioned Pape Gueye.

Speaking to the media in the aftermath of his side’s impressive victory, midfielder Gueye opened up on an on-pitch exchange between he and Lamine, admitting:

“Guys, Lamine Yamal is really too good. At one point, he stared at me… I said: ‘Ehhh, I don’t want to end up in a TikTok edit,’ I backed away straight away (laughs). Quiet end of the season…”
