West Brom have been told that Marti Cifuentes would be a smart appointment after it was revealed that they had held talks with the QPR boss.

The Baggies are on the lookout for a new manager after Tony Mowbray was sacked last week after a difficult few months after he had replaced Carlos Corberan.

With James Morrison leading the team going into the final day clash against Luton Town, and Albion out of the play-off picture, there’s no rush to make a decision.

However, it appears West Brom are making moves behind the scenes, as it was said that they had been in talks with representatives of Cifuentes about the job, just days after it was suggested the ex-Hammarby boss could leave QPR due to issues with CEO Christian Nourry.

Naturally, that had fans talking, and when quizzed about the prospect of Cifuentes joining, fan pundit Callum told FLW that he would be pleased if the QPR boss took over, as he backed him to build a long-term project, much like his compatriot Carlos Corberan did before leaving for Valencia at Christmas.

I think the majority of fans of clubs in the Championship, if they were offered the chance to swap their manager for Marti Cifuentes, they would put a great deal of thought into it, and he’d definitely be an attractive manager for most in the league.

He’s done a great job in the circumstances at QPR, and I think if he was interested in the job, I would take him at Albion - he would definitely be towards the top end of my list.

With the sort of manager that Albion could get, Cifuentes would be an attractive option. He’s quite young still for a manager, and I think he could lead a project similar to Corberan. So, personally, I’d take Cifuentes.”

Marti Cifuentes could be the perfect fit for West Brom

This update should excite Albion fans as Cifuentes does look as though he would be a good fit at The Hawthorns.

Firstly, he has Championship experience, and the great work he has done with the R’s shouldn’t be underestimated. He saved them from relegation last season, and whilst they will end up mid-table in this campaign, it’s a respectable finish.

He has done that with limited resources, and most would agree that Albion have a better squad than QPR, so it’s natural to presume he could do more with an improved group of players. Plus, they may be in a position to spend more than the Londoners under Shilen Patel.

The comparisons to Corberan may seem lazy due to the nationality, but, like the Valencia chief, Cifuentes is a methodical, tactical coach.

They share similar philosophies and the results under Corberan compared to Mowbray suggest Albion’s squad responds to someone with this approach.

Of course, West Brom will consider plenty of candidates for this role, with Alexander Blessin another name in the frame, but Cifuentes could be just what they need as they try to push for promotion next season.
