We spoke to our Hudderfield Town pundit about their rumoured interest in Dion Charles.
Huddersfield Town's Tuesday night victory over Wycombe Wanderers put Michael Duff's side right back in the automatic promotion hunt - and now they need to reinforce areas of their squad to try and break into the top two.
A dogged and defensive display from the Terriers saw them pick up a 1-0 win over Matt Bloomfield's side, with Herbie Kane's stunning volley enough to secure the three points.
This now places Town just four points off the top two with a solitary game in hand on both Wrexham and the Chairboys.
However, the concern around a potential goalscorer still remains, with no player scoring more than six league goals this season.
In all likelihood, they will look to address that this January window and as revealed exclusively by Football League World, they are targeting Bolton Wanderers striker Dion Charles.
The Trotters forward, who has amassed 28 caps for Northern Ireland's national team, has fallen out of favour at the Toughsheet Community Stadium in recent weeks as a starting player, but remains a proven goalscorer, having netted 41 goals across the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons.
Charles could prove to be a real coup for Huddersfield if they're able to get a deal over the line, providing the clinical edge they have been missing to this point.
For a Huddersfield perspective on the matter, we turned to our resident Terriers pundit, Graeme Rayner, to share his thoughts on whether his club should make a move for Charles.
On this topic, he said: "I think he looks like the kind of striker we would like to bring in.
"All of his goals have come from inside the box, and he seems to know where the goal is. We create a lot of chances, and he has good feet, good awareness, and is mobile.
"He is 29, so not young, but these days, that is the prime of a footballer's career.
"In terms of a fee, I would be happy with anything around the £1 million mark - £1 million to £1.5 million. I wouldn't pay more than that.
"That is because, while he is what we need to get out of this division, I am not convinced he is good enough to help us in a higher division. So, we need some sort of resale value there, or he is going to be a potential supporting player.
"The first thing we have to do is get out of the division, and he can certainly help us there. I know we are still linked with Joe Taylor, so it would be interesting to see how they link up as a pair.
"The other advantage with Dion Charles is that he is a Northern Ireland international. We have two of those in our side in Brodie Spencer and Callum Marshall, who is on loan from West Ham. Ideally, if he gets on with those guys at international level, then he will fit quite well in our dressing room.
"Also, Bolton isn’t a million miles away, so he wouldn’t have a big geographical change.
"It ticks all the boxes."
As previously stated by Rayner, Huddersfield need to add more than one striker to their squad to become a more potent attacking threat.
If Charles and Taylor were to sign, that would form an incredibly strong partnership, but nothing is certain, especially in a winter window when deals can be expensive.
Duff will be desperate for the Huddersfield hierarchy to make the most of January and if they can make two top additions, then you would be hard-pushed to say they won't be involved in the promotion race.
