Wrexham AFC face potential Jamie Vardy blow as new Wolves transfer update emerges

Wolves are thought to be monitoring Jamie Vardy after it was announced the striker is leaving Leicester City when his contract expires this summer.
Wrexham AFC have been linked with a sensational move for Leicester City's Jamie Vardy after his impending exit from the King Power Stadium following 13 years of stellar service was confirmed, but they could now face fresh competition from Premier League side Wolves in a potential blow.
The 38-year-old is widely regarded as Leicester’s best ever player, but it was announced last week that he will be departing when his contract expires later this year.
However, the ex-England international has made it clear he won’t be retiring, and he has been linked with several clubs ahead of becoming a free agent, including Wrexham.
And it appears a Premier League offer may be forthcoming for the striker, as Football Insider have claimed that Wolves are keen on Vardy amid links to Wrexham.
Whilst it’s unclear whether they will firm that interest up with a contract offer, the update states that they see him as someone who could bolster their options in attack, although it’s acknowledged he won’t be a key player.
Wolves came up against Vardy on Saturday, with the Leicester man missing a penalty in a 3-0 defeat, but Wanderers boss Vitor Pereira had spoken highly of the Premier League winner leading up to the game.
A move to the Molineux could be on the cards, then, and that may just represent something of a blow to Wrexham days after their third successive promotion was sealed.
The ambitious Welsh side will return to the Championship for 2025/26 and have been tipped to make a splash in the transfer market, as they have done throughout their ascent from the National League, leading Vardy to be linked with a shock move to Phil Parkinson's side.
Last year, Wrexham executive Humphrey Ker refused to rule out a move for Vardy, although the opportunity to remain in the Premier League with Wolves may make any potential pursuit much more difficult.
In truth, it would be a surprise if Wolves signed Vardy, as despite his seven goals in the top-flight this season, he hasn’t made the same impact as in years gone by.
Plus, Wolves are likely to be in a position to spend if Matheus Cunha leaves, which is expected, so they may be targeting younger players who can improve the XI.
From Vardy’s perspective, the chance to play in the Premier League again is going to appeal, but he will know realistically that he will have to settle for fewer minutes if he wants to remain at that level.
Alternatively, he could drop to the Championship where he could become an influential player somewhere - as he was with Leicester in 2023/24, or try his hand abroad for the first time in his career.
At Wrexham, Vardy would be the new poster boy and the project of helping the side into the Premier League - with the Hollywood glitz and glamour of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, of course - is an exciting one that has convinced many players to drop down a level and rebuff clubs of a higher league standing in recent times.
You can be sure that he won’t be short of options, and the fact he is available on a free means it’s entirely down to Vardy where he is playing his football next season, and he will have to weigh up all the factors before making a decision.
