Manchester City star Rodri has this week provided his take on the long-standing ‘GOAT’ debate, between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Midfielder Rodri, for his part, of course recently joined the two greatest players of the modern era in an exclusive club.
This came by way of the Spanish international being named world football’s very best, courtesy of the Ballon d’Or award.
Speaking as part of his ensuing media tour, it therefore came as little surprise when the subject of the Messi versus Ronaldo debate was put to Rodri.
And the 28-year-old, fresh off Ángel Di Maria doing likewise, showcased absolutely no hesitation in throwing his backing behind the former.
During an interview with El Hormiguero, Rodri revealed his opinion that, whilst Cristiano Ronaldo did brilliantly to reach the level he did, Leo Messi’s natural talent sets him completely apart:
”Messi. I have no doubt. In the end, Cristiano has managed to match Messi in many things, maybe without the innate talent that Leo has. But those of us who have played against them can see the difference.
”We didn’t want Cristiano to step into the box, because he was lethal there. But with Messi, the danger is everywhere on the pitch. When he gets the ball, you say ‘danger’ because something is going to happen here.”
