The 21-year-old suffered a season-ending injury in the Premier League, but could return with bang in the Championship.

Highlights

  • Ramsey's previous success in the Championship at Middlesbrough proves he can be a top player in the league.
  • When Ramsey returns from injury, he will need to fight for his spot in a competitive Burnley squad.
  • If utilized correctly in the attacking third, Ramsey could be a game-changer for Burnley this season.

Burnley started the new Championship season in impressive fashion, easing past Luton Town at Kenilworth Road in a 4-1 win.

However, they went into the fixture still without a full-strength squad. Among the absentees was one of their summer signings from last year, who missed the majority of the 2023/24 campaign with an injury.

Aaron Ramsey, 21, injured his knee in a Premier League game against Arsenal in February and has been ruled out for the majority of 2024.

Ramsey made the switch to Burnley for £12 million from Aston Villa on a five-year deal but had only been able to make 17 appearances for the Clarets before his injury. Yet, when he returns, he will come back to a league that he has previously been dominant in with both Norwich City and Middlesbrough.

After spending the first half of the 2022/23 campaign on loan at Norwich, Ramsey was recalled after picking up an injury during the World Cup break.

He scored three goals and picked up three assists in 18 Championship games before he returned to Villa, yet, on deadline day of the January transfer window, he was loaned out to Middlesbrough.

It was in Teesside where he showed his potential, finding the back of the net five times in just 11 appearances, including a brace against Reading in a 5-0 victory.

Another injury ruled him out for the final four games of the season, as well as the play-offs, but Ramsey was pivotal to Boro getting so close to promotion, and perhaps they may have found more success if he was able to stay fit.

Nevertheless, he provided different qualities at the Riverside compared to his time with the Canaries, as he became more involved with situations inside the box, rather than in the remainder of the final third.

Ramsey will want to show Scott Parker his ability from the off

When Ramsey does return to the team, he will have to fight to get his place back after such a long period of time away.

Burnley have several players who can play in the same position as the 21-year-old, with Wilson Odobert and Manuel Benson both able to operate behind the striker, but if he comes back scoring at the same rate as he did at Middlesbrough, Scott Parker will find it easier to make the decision.

Ramsey started just five games in the Premier League but struggled out of position, often finding himself out on the wing or deeper in midfield.

If Parker is able to fit him into the attacking third, then he will be like a new signing for the Clarets, and he will potentially save Burnley money if they are in need of a new player in the attacking midfield space.

Ramsey has the ability to hit the ground running and become a major star in this season's Burnley team, but, he will have his work cut out with such a fantastic squad already at Turf Moor.
