In a battle between two sides at the thick end of the European chase, Leipzig could not have hoped for a better start against a Mainz side looking for a European place for the first time in nine years.
Benjamin Sesko did excellently to find Lois Openda on the right-hand side of the box, whose subsequent ball into the area caused a scramble capitalised on by Xavi Simons, who slammed home into the roof of the net to give die Roten Bullen the lead inside a minute.
However, it took just six minutes in the second half for Mainz to prove yet again, why they should not be written off against any opposition.
Starting the second half with purpose, Nadiem Amiri slammed the ball home inside the box to drag his side level before a period of Mainz pressure.
And die Nullfünfer completed the turnaround in the 58th minute, when the talismanic Jonathan Burkardt struck the ball home after being found by Amiri on the left-hand side of the box.
After taking the lead, it was the visitors who remained the much better side in an attacking sense, and they came close to adding a third when Burkardt hit the post after a lovely passing move.
Recovering impeccably from a far-from-ideal first minute and hanging on towards the end, Mainz place themselves in fourth ahead of Freiburg's trip to Augsburg tomorrow afternoon.
Borussia Mönchengladbach were able to perfectly capitalise on Stuttgart's loss against Bayern last night, with Gerardo Seoane's Fohlenelf climbing up to 8th after beating Heidenheim 3-0.
Falling victim to Bochum being awarded three points from the much-discussed Patrick Drewes lighter incident in December, Heidenheim are left sitting in the bottom two with crucial clashes against Hoffenheim and Holstein Kiel approaching.
Robin Hack opened the scoring for the visitors just after the clock ticked over seven minutes. The wideman was played through on goal after Julian Weigl capitalised on a loose ball in midfield.
Just over ten minutes later, Gladbach added a second via a beautiful Nathan Ngoumou finish.
After a lovely give-and-go with Alassane Plea, Ngoumou unleased a fantastic side-footed finish from the edge of the box which sailed in off the crossbar, putting the visitors in firm control on their travels.
Seoane's men went on to strengthen their grip throughout the second half, with Hack going on to add a second to his tally with a curling effort from distance, and he believed that he added a third not long after a nonchalant finish inside the box.
The goal, however, was chalked off to keep the score at 3-0, with this remaining the same until the final whistle that saw Gladbach claim a fantastic away win.
Much like Gladbach, Wolfsburg were also able to capitalise on last night's proceedings, moving up to 7th after a 2-0 away win against Werder Bremen.
Netting a brace, Patrick Wimmer's first came in the 6th minute to open the scoring. With Jonas Wind winning a header from a corner, the ball was bundled home by the back of Wimmer.
Bremen found themselves with chances to equalise, with Andre Silva hitting the post, and Jens Stage seeing a one-on-one opportunity saved by Marius Müller.
However just three minutes into the second half, Wolfsburg added a second to strengthen their grip on the points, as Patrick Wimmer added a second.
Driving into the Bremen half, the Austrian let rip with a powerful effort from 25 yards out, sending the ball sailing into the top corner of Michael Zetterer's net.
However, to provide some late drama, Mitchell Weiser looped the ball home in the 90th minute with added time still remaining at Weserstadion.
Wolfsburg though, were able to see out a crucial 2-1 win despite Bremen hitting the post in added time. The win sees die Wölfe move up to 7th.
Going goal crazy against Union Berlin in a 6-0 win, Dortmund's first half on their travels today was a stark contrast to their showing in last Saturday's Topspiel.
St. Pauli went into half time unfortunate to not have opened the scoring, with Noah Weißhaupt, in particular, putting in a lively performance, as is now expected of the Freiburg loanee.
However as captain Jackson Irvive admitted recently, Pauli have left too many points on the table from favourable positions this campaign, and the same could be said this afternoon.
Showing his striker instincts, Serhou Guirassy opened the scoring for the visitors in the 50th minute after capitalising on a ball across the box from Karim Adeyemi.
Adeyemi himself went on to double the lead for die Schwarzgelben just eight minutes later, netting a sensational solo goal after twisting and turning inside the box before sending the travelling Dortmund contingent into raptures.
Getting their form back on track in recent weeks, Dortmund now sit six points away from a Champions League position in which they badly crave.
St. Pauli find themselves in 15th, now just four points ahead of Bochum in the relegation playoff place.
Bochum went into this weekend after finally being awarded three points from their bizarre incident against Union Berlin in December.
With goalkeeper Patrick Drewes being struck by a lighter, Bochum were forced to play with nine men after using up all of their substitutions, as well as picking up a red card.
With the incident being deemed to have severely impacted proceedings, Bochum now see the points added to their tally, subsequently being lifted out of the bottom two and into the relegation playoff position ahead of Heidenheim.
However, to dampen spirits at the Ruhrstadion, Hoffenheim's Tom Bischof opened the scoring for the visitors in the 72nd minute after a tense encounter for large periods.
The Bayern-bound midfielder let rip from 25 yards out and caught out the experienced Timo Horn via an awful bounce inside the box.
Securing a late point last time out against VfB Stuttgart, Hoffenheim carry on their run of form that sees the club sit in 13th.
While out of the bottom two, Bochum currently sit in the relegation playoff place, four points away from St. Pauli.
