Just ahead of the 2021 Guard1anes tournament kicking off on Friday, a pair of clubs have experienced COVID-19 outbreaks that could potentially put the beginning of the new season in jeopardy.

As indicated by the biosafety protocol, the players and staff members underwent new tests to detect coronavirus prior to the start of the tournament. However, the results are not encouraging.

On Thursday, Club León announced that they had five positive cases among both staff and first-team players. All affected parties are currently in isolation.

According to Fox Sports, Santos Laguna have an even worse outbreak on their hands. In total, there are 18 players (14 U-20s, four first-team) who have reportedly tested positive in addition to one staff member.

No official announcement has yet to come from the club but, at the moment, they are still set to host Cruz Azul this Sunday.

Necaxa reported a positive case from their U-20 side, while second-tier Atlético Morelia will have their season-opening clash with Tampico Madero rescheduled after they reported a total of 12 positive cases.
