The goalkeeping situation at FC Barcelona has been nothing short of a roller coaster ride this season. The Catalans started the season with Marc Andre Ter Stegen well-established as the starting shot-stopper.

However, his season was cut short due to a serious tear of the patellar tendon, and he is now working to be able to get back to full fitness and get back to the pitch before the current season ends.

Following his injury, Inaki Pena was the starting goalkeeper for a few months, despite the Blaugranes having signed Wojciech Szczesny, who had retired at the end of the last season.

It looked like the Spaniard would remain the preferred starter for Flick till the return of Ter Stegen, but things changed quickly in January.

The La Masia graduate was late for a training session ahead of the Spanish Super Cup semi-final tie against Athletic Club, for which he was penalized by Flick by giving the starting spot for this game to the Pole.

However, Pena was unable to return to the starting line-up even in the ensuing games, and his future at Barcelona is now looking highly uncertain, especially as Flick has shown no signs of getting the Spaniard back in his starting line-up.

There is also a feeling in the Barcelona dressing room that there might be some deeper problems that have led to this unfortunate situation for the goalkeeper.

In such a context, Fichajes reports that this situation might lead to his exit from the Blaugrana club in the next summer transfer window, as the goalkeeper is not willing to spend an entire season without playing opportunities.

Several teams have already become alert to his situation and can make a move if the Catalans are willing to facilitate his transfer.

For now, it seems the Spaniard’s future at Barcelona will be determined by how his relationship develops with the German coach in the coming months. But as things stand, his departure from the Catalan club does not look too remote a possibility.
