Marcus Rashford played his first minutes of competitive football for eight weeks last night during Aston Villa’s FA Cup triumph over Tottenham Hotspur.

Unai Emery’s side trounced the visitors for the best part of the fourth-round tie after breaking the deadlock inside the first minute via Jacob Ramsey.

Rashford, meanwhile, was made to wait until the 66th minute to make his debut when he replaced fellow January arrival, Donyell Malen, with his entrance coming moments after Morgan Rogers had extended Villa’s lead to 2-0.

The Manchester United loanee completed 13 accurate passes in his 24 minutes played – giving him a success rate of 93 per cent – while also completing one dribble, winning three ground duels and one aerial duel. He finished his shift with a rating of 6.8 on Sofascore and will now be looking to make his maiden start when the Villans host Ipswich Town on Saturday afternoon.

After the full-time whistle had blown and the dust had settled on an end-to-end contest, Rashford took to Instagram to express his gratitude to the Villa Park faithful, who already had a chant prepared for their new No.9 ready for his first appearance.

“Thank you for the warm welcome. Great team performance,” said the forward, to which Jadon Sancho replied: “Freedom.”

Also enjoying a season-long loan with United’s Premier League rivals Chelsea, Sancho, who earned a reported £250,000 each week before his move, knows first-hand how it feels to be frozen out of the squad at Old Trafford – hence, supporters presuming his comment is a dig towards the club/Ruben Amorim.

Both Reds are likely to complete permanent moves away upon the culmination of 2024/2025, which is pretty remarkable given, at one time of day, it was thought they’d be the future of United.
