In an incredible Sunday afternoon WSL match, Aston Villa Women found a way to storm back after an earlier first-half deficit and secure the three points. It was the type of performance that Natalia Arroyo would have asked for from her side. Knowing how difficult it is to get a result at Chigwell Construction Stadium, Villa pulled off something that not many others have in their 3-2 victory over the Hammers.
The opening 45 saw Rachel Daly and Ebony Salmon score for the visitors. Even at the half, Arroyo went to her bench at the break. The Spaniard substituted Miri Taylor and Jordan Nobbs and put Jill Baijings and Katie Robinson in their place. It was a game in which the Villa boss demonstrated her full faith in the depth at her disposal.
Shortly into the second half, Lucy Parker played a ball into space. The well-timed run of Chasity Grant beat the offside line, and the Dutch player slotted it home for what proved to be the game-winner. Naturally, the hosts tried to claw back into the match toward the end. It was Villa, however, who looked more dangerous and had numerous comfortable spells of possession.
The left wing-back position in particular deserves praise for Sunday's efforts. Mayumi Pacheco was a consistent threat when she joined the attack. Around the 59th minute specifically, her low-driven cross could have found one of her Villa teammates and put the Hammers' backline under pressure.
Rachel Maltby came on with about 25 minutes to go and put in an excellent shift herself. The 18-year-old did well in preventing West Ham attacks from materializing on her side and looked comfortable in possession.
All in all, it was a match that was high-flying and high-paced in the opening half. Things sizzled down somewhat during the second half, but Villa fully deserved the three points and did enough to see the result through.
