With Euro 2022 almost upon us, it’s time to look at five contenders for the Golden Boot award.

There’s plenty of goalscoring prowess across all of the teams involved in the tournament, guaranteeing entertainment.

We’ve narrowed the talent down to five names who could finish as top scorer this time around.

Ada Hegerberg (Norway)

Here’s an interesting candidate for the award this summer. Hegerberg has not played in an international tournament since 2017 due to a dispute with Norway over pay and conditions, describing that time as “deeply depressing.”

For that reason, the 26-year-old has only ever scored once at a European Championships, and that was back in 2013. Don’t let that fool you, though.

At club level, Hegerberg has taken a starring role on the biggest stages. She’s the all-time highest goalscorer in the Women’s Champions League, as well as holding the single-season record in that competition with 15.

The striker has more goals (236) than appearances (210) for Lyon and now she has Euros glory in her sights.

Ellen White (England)

Are you ready for the goggles?

You might be seeing a lot of Ellen White’s famous goal celebration over the course of the Euros, which will of course be played on home soil for England.

She’s England women’s all-time top goalscorer with 50, which gives her a record of almost one in two for the Three Lions.

While some players in this list lack goals in major tournaments, White scored seven at the 2019 World Cup.

In short, she’s been there, done that.

She might be nearing the end of her international career at the age of 33, but her vast experience will serve her well leading the line for England once again.

Alexia Putellas (Spain)

The Champions League top scorer for 2021/22 is bound to be among the favourites for pulling off the same feat internationally, and that’s exactly what Spain’s Alexia Putellas is.

The Barcelona star fired in 11 times in Europe last season, as her side finished runners-up to Lyon.

She may not play up front, but that doesn’t hold her back.

An exceptionally gifted player who once scored three goals in four minutes for Barça during an 8-0 demolition of Valencia.

Vivianne Miedema (Netherlands)

A reigning Euros champion, Vivianne Miedema is a household name in women’s football name, in no small part thanks to the four goals she scored as the Netherlands won the last Euros in 2017.

That was no one-off. Miedema has 94 international goals, won the Golden Boot at last summer’s Olympics, and has an astonishing 114 goals in 132 appearances for Arsenal without taking a single penalty.

It’s pretty clear that the 25-year-old has advanced immeasurably since the 2017 tournament, becoming the all-time top scorer in the WSL, so expect more than four goals this time around.

As for the Golden Boot?

It stands to reason that she will be right up there come the end of July.

Lea Schüller (Germany)

Watch out for this Germany forward, who might not be the biggest name on this list but scores for fun both for Bayern Munich and the national team.

Schüller has represented Germany at all youth levels, and since moving to the senior side in 2017 has bagged 25 goals in 39 appearances.

That includes an Arnold Clark Cup clash with Spain – who at the time had gone over 25 hours without conceding – where Schüller popped up with an 88th minute winner.

The 23-year-old is a natural goalscorer and there’s no reason to think she won’t continue that record at this summer’s Euros.
