1) On the brink of glory

Bayern top the Bundesliga table with six games remaning and they can take another big step towards regaining title by beating their fierce rivals. As well as the practical boost three Klassiker points would bring in the title run-in, there is great symbolism at stake.

After a comprehensive UEFA Champions League win against Bundesliga holders Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern are well on the way to becoming the undisputed masters of the German game once again. A strong showing and first win in three Klassikers against Dortmund will further solidify that status.

A Bayern squad packed with serial winners will, therefore, be eager to show who is boss against BVB, while the vision of lifting the Bundesliga trophy in a few weeks has to be a huge motivating factor for Vincent Kompany in his first season in the club hot seat and Kane, who is on the brink of ending his trophy drought.

2) No stopping those goals

Bayern are the league’s highest-scoring side, having smashed in a sensational 81 goals after 28 matches. Indeed, their rate of 2.89 goals per game puts them on course to outscore last term's unbeaten champions, Leverkusen, by the end of the campaign.

The formidable attack has been spearheaded by Kane, the league’s top scorer with 23 goals. The English strike sensation is on the home straight towards picking up his second consecutive Bundesliga top scorer honour, and will surely be recalling memories of the hat-trick in his first-ever Klassiker encounter in November 2023. He might also have other images of disappointed Dortmund defenders in mind, as he has scored more career goals against the Ruhr club - seven in seven matches for Tottenham and Bayern - than any other non-English opponent.

The supporting cast of Jamal Musiala, Michael Olise and Leroy Sané have also chipped in throughout 2024/25, scoring another 29 goals between them so far as Bayern have overwhelmed defences up and down the Bundesliga. Musiala will miss the Klassiker after sustaining an injury in the 3-1 win at Augsburg on Matchday 28, with Bayern nevertheless scoring twice after the playmaker was taken off to highlight their all-round attacking prowess.

What's more, only seven sides have conceded more than Dortmund's 43 goals after 28 matches, so a long 90 minutes for the visiting defence is to be expected!

3) Home sWWWeet home

Bayern's home form has provided the foundation for their table-topping form. Of the 14 Bundesliga games they've played at the Allianz Arena so far this season, the record champions have only lost once, and only drawn once, too. That means out of a possible 42 points, they’ve claimed 37. Bayern have also conceded just 14 goals at home in the current campaign, scoring 46 at the other end.

It’s been more of the same in their quest to contest another Champions League home final, with Kompany's charges unbeaten in six European games on their own patch in 2024/25, winning five. It would take an unlikely turn of events for a Dortmund side that have won just four of 14 away matches this season to claim any kind of result in Bayern's magnificent back yard.

4) History lesson

While the last meeting between these two ended all square, recent history paints a very different picture - one covered in Bayern red with the merest trace of black and yellow. Of their last 10 meetings in all competitions, the Bavarians have won seven. Extend that period to the past 15 games, and Bayern have won 11.

Dortmund's 2-0 win at the Allianz Arena last season was their first win against Bayern in the Bundesliga since the 2018/19 season, with Bayern clocking up two 4-0 triumphs and a pair of 4-2 victories in between. That slip-up last spring was the exception to the rule, with Bayern winning nine of their past 10 home Klassikers.

5) Digging deep

Bayern have continued to rack up results this season with remarkable resilience, and the first Klassiker meeting of the campaign was a handy illustration. Talisman Kane went off injured at the Singal Iduna Park shortly after Jamie Gittens had scored the opener for the hosts, but Bayern still bounced back to rescue a draw late on, thanks to a Musiala header.

With Manuel Neuer, Alphonso Davies, Dayot Upamecano and Kingsley Coman being joined by Musiala on a lengthy injury list a week ahead of Der Klassiker, some may question how the depleted league leaders will handle the load with two legs of a Champions League quarter-final against Inter Milan either side of the clash. However, with several experienced squad members and a number of talented youngsters waiting in the wings, Kompany needn't fret. Bayern boast the depth and quality to beat the very best, Dortmund included.
