Phil Costa·18 January 2023
While Cody Gakpo, Mykhailo Mudryk and others have snatched the headlines this January transfer window – who are the future stars deserving moves away?
We’ve highlighted five young prospects who clubs across Europe should be looking at …
Age: 18
Club: Real Valladolid
It’s often said that defenders mature later into their careers, and that playing young defenders will cost you points. That line of thinking doesn’t apply to Iván Fresneda.
The teenager has been a standout performer for Real Valladolid this season, with his tackling and ability to play an inverted role alerting several top clubs across Europe.
Age: 20
Club: FC Luzern
We’re not sure why, but diminutive left-footed midfielders who operate at the base of midfield just hit different – and FC Luzern have a great one on their hands.
Ardon Jashari has already been linked with Juventus and Arsenal, with his high technical level, quick thinking and sharp feet appealing to bigger clubs already.
Age: 17
Club: Fenerbahçe
It wasn’t the fairytale that many were hoping for when Mesut Özil signed for boyhood club Fenerbahçe in 2021. Luckily for them – his regen was about to breakthrough.
Arda Güler doesn’t turn 18 until February but has magic in his boots with incredible technique and vision, already shining for the club at top flight and Europa League level.
Age: 20
Club: Athletic Club
Most of you will know Iñaki Williams, who has forged an impressive LaLiga career playing for Athletic Club. His brother, Nico, is expected to be even better.
The 20-year-old is a dynamic, two-footed wide player who burns defenders for fun and was already included in Spain’s most recent World Cup squad in Qatar.
Age: 19
Club: Montpellier
It almost feels unfair how France are able to produce top talent with such consistency, and Elye Wahi looks to be the next great striker on their conveyor belt.
The Montpellier forward became only the third teenager in Ligue 1 history to score 20 goals, with his movement, speed and finishing ability on both feet impressing.
