Manchester United suffered their eighth defeat in 12 Premier League matches after a disappointing performance against Tottenham Hotspur on the road.
The Red Devils were hampered by injury and fitness issues before the game, and there were six absentees from the victory over Leicester City in the FA Cup fourth round.
Despite this, United had opportunities to score against Spurs, and will be disappointed with the eventual outcome. Alejandro Garnacho should have scored in the first half while Joshua Zirkzee had another good chance in the second.
Looking at the negatives, Casemiro was far from his best in the number six role. The Brazilian has been out-of-favour under manager Ruben Amorim in recent months with the Portuguese admitting that the midfielder can’t cope with the higher intensity.
We saw a firm example yesterday as Casemiro was ran ragged by Spurs’ midfield. The 32-year-old won 11 out of 18 duels (seven duels lost) but lost possession on 12 occasions and was dribbled past four times over 90 minutes.
The former Real Madrid man won just three out of seven tackles contested. He was unsuccessful with 57% of his tackles and looked a passenger at times with his limited mobility at the current phase of his career.
It is quite clear that Casemiro is no longer in his prime and yesterday highlighted why Amorim has been reluctant to pick him. He has been an unused substitute in 13 of the last 19 games under the Portuguese.
Casemiro, who received a 4/10 rating from Manchester Evening News, must be dropped to the bench for the trip to Everton this weekend with Manuel Ugarte and Toby Collyer likely to return to training.
Ugarte and Collyer picked up knocks in the lead up to the game, but it is anticipated that one of them will make the starting line-up ahead of Casemiro at Goodison Park.
