Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof has declared his love and admiration for Benfica, even as he continues to be linked with a return to Estádio da Luz.
Lindelof’s contract expires at the end of the season and it’s very unlikely that he will be offered an extension or fresh terms.
United are set to release him in June, making him available as a free agent.
So far this season, Lindelof has made just 14 appearances, only six of which have been as a starter. His recent inclusions in the XI against Arsenal and Leicester City marked his first Premier League starts in almost a year.
A report covered by The Peoples Person earlier this month indicated that the Swede is pushing for a return to Benfica.
He joined United from the Portuguese side in 2017, brought in by former manager Jose Mourinho ahead of the 2017/18 season.
It was stated that Lindelof frequently visits Portugal with his family and believes the time is right to go back to the Eagles, where he made his name.
The 30-year-old spoke to Sebastião Sousa-Pinto and opened up on the prospect of returning to Benfica in the summer.
Lindelof remarked, “Benfica as a club means a lot to me. It’s the club that made me the player I am today.”
“I don’t know what will happen and what my decision will be.”
“But it’s a club that means a lot to me and a club that I like. I don’t only have myself to think about. It’s a decision we have to make together as a family.”
Lindelof also issued an update on his United future, indicating he is comfortable at Old Trafford.
He said [as quoted by the PA News Agency via Manchester Evening News], “I’m very comfortable in United. I’ve been there for a long time and it’s the world’s best league.”
“I’ll have to talk to everyone involved going forward.”
United are back in action on April 1 when they go away to the City Ground to face Nottingham Forest.
