Manchester City picked up a vital 4-nil win over Newcastle United at the Etihad yesterday. The win sees Pep Guardiola’s side move into fourth on the Premier League table. It was a win that City needed in their chase to secure Champions League football for next season. But the manner of City’s performance in the win stood out. With Nico dictating the midfield battle, Pep Guardiola’s side had the ingredient they have lacked for the majority of this season. But Manchester City’s attacking play stood out and they looked to have a different dimension in the final third.
Pep Guardiola started Erling Haaland, Omar Marmoush and Savinho as City’s attacking options yesterday. Those three players do offer something different to Manchester City’s attacking play. There is the intelligent movement and pace of Haaland and Marmoush. Their ability to get in behind the Newcastle defence did stand out in the first half. It was on show for Omar Marmoush’s first goal yesterday. A simple long ball from Ederson split Newcastle’s defence and Marmoush did the rest. Erling Haaland also offered a similar threat yesterday.
The play of Savinho was also brilliant throughout yesterday’s match. He gave Lewis Hall a torrid time on City’s right-hand side, and he was a constant threat throughout yesterday’s game. His assist to set up Omar Marmoush’s hat trick goal was sublime. But the combination of all three of City’s frontmen did give Pep Guardiola’s side another dimension up front.
Yesterday we got a glimpse of what Manchester City’s attacking play can look like when the entire team fires. It was the first time that City have clicked since Omar Marmoush arrived at the club. You factor in the runs from midfield of Phil Foden and Ilkay Gundogan and the ability of Josko Gvardiol to join City’s attack and you get the sense that there is more to come in the final third from Pep Guardiola’s side.
