Aaron Ramsdale's redemption arc at Southampton might take a bitter twist, as the former Arsenal goalie is now wanted by Manchester United.
Southampton has had a season to forget, but it didn't look that way heading into the season. Before this campaign commenced, Southampton had invested in their squad, with Aaron Ramsdale tipped to be the difference maker between the sticks.
Aaron Ramsdale was, and still is, one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League. Just over a year before signing for Southampton, he was Arsenal's number one goalkeeper in their first title race competing team. Key performances against Spurs and Liverpool granted the Gunners a lifeline, and he was a key part of the squad that finished second in 2022-23.
However, a year after being the star of the show for Arsenal, a move to Southampton was necessary. Ramsdale was replaced in the starting lineup by David Raya and after a season without being the number one, Ramsdale needed to move somewhere for regular minutes.
And that's one thing he did achieve at Southampton. He can't fault his game time, but now, Ramsdale finds himself in a similar position of needing a move away.
While his character is humble, Ramsdale is frankly too good to play in the second tier of English football. Therefore, he'll wait for the Premier League clubs to come calling.
According to a report from the Mirror, Manchester United has been tipped as a suitor for Aaron Ramsdale, alongside West Ham. It's safe to say that Ramsdale wouldn't have expected to be playing for either of these two clubs, given their rivalries with Arsenal.
Ramsdale risks being looked at sourly by his former supporters at Arsenal. Given their rivalry, it is hard for any Arsenal fan to respect a Man United player, especially with the history of players moving between those clubs.
From Southampton's perspective, it doesn't matter where Ramsdale moves, as long as they get a healthy cheque from his sale. Ramsdale won't go down as a club legend, but he's certainly one of the most prizable assets at the club.
Like or not, England internationals come with an added tax on top of their value. This is because the Premier League values homegrown players, and clubs in England are prepared to pay a pretty penny more for English talent. Still, this works in Southampton's favour this summer.
