Group D came to a close on Wednesday evening as Egypt took on Sudan while Guinea-Bissau faced leaders Nigeria.
Here’s what happened.
Scorers: Abdelmoneim 35′
Egypt knew that a point here would likely be enough to send them through to the group stages and subsequently flew out of the blocks looking for that early goal.
Mohamed Salah looked dangerous on the right-hand side but couldn’t unlock the Sudan defence.
But it was a centre-back who scored the opening goal as Mohamed Abdelmoneim headed home from a corner after 35 minutes.
After the break, the north Africans continued to push for a second goal that would take them out of sight but a mix of good defending and suspect finishing prevented that from happening.
Scorers: Sadiq 56′, Troost-Ekong 79′
Nigeria were guaranteed a place in the next round and as such struggled to up their tempo when needed in the first half.
Kelechi Iheanacho looked dangerous leading the line but couldn’t find a way past a belligerent Guinea-Bissau defence.
Into the second half and the Golden Eagles eventually did get their opener as Umar Sadiq finished well on 56 minutes.
And the game as a contest was done in the final 11 minutes as William Troost-Ekong doubled Nigeria’s lead.
