Gabriel Agbonlahor has warned Aston Villa they would be making a “big mistake” if they do not offer Ahmed Elmohamady a new contract.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer backed his ex-teammate to force Dean Smith to U-turn with his performances between now and the end of the season.

Dean Smith wants Frederic Guilbert to return from his loan spell with Strasbourg in the summer and become back up to Matty Cash.

Elmohamady has started Villa’s last four Premier League games with Cash out with a groin injury.

Asked what he made of Villa’s plan to let Elmohamady go, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I think that would be a big mistake.

“Elmohamady is Mr Reliable. You’re not letting Guilbert go out on loan if you don’t rate Elmohamady.

“I was there with him, he’s a lovely guy and a great pro. At his age to still be able to play in the Premier League is a big thing.

“For me, he has been Mr Reliable in the last few games he’s been asked to come in.

“I just think they’d be making a mistake. Guilbert is a good player but I still think Elmohamady is the better right-back.

“We don’t know how long Cash is out for, Elmohamady might have some more game time over the next couple of months and I’m sure his performances will give him a good chance of earning a new deal.

“He loves being at Aston Villa and I just feel it would be a wise decision from Dean Smith to give him a new deal.”
