SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador – CD Águila defeated Club Olimpia 2-nil in the 2024 Central American Cup on Thursday at Estadio Cuscatlán in San Salvador, El Salvador.
The victory gives Águila the momentary lead in Group C after three fixtures. The Salvadorian outfit has accumulated seven points after registering two wins and a draw in its quest to qualify for the knockout round.
Olimpia goalkeeper Edrick Menjívar denied Melvin Cartagena in the 29’ in the closest chance for the home side during the first half.
Edwin Rodríguez and Jorge Benguché had promising opportunities for Olimpia in the 38’, but Águila goalkeeper Benji Villalobos and the crossbar prevented the visitors from scoring the opener.
Rodríguez came close to handing Olimpia the lead with a look inside the box in the first minute of the second half but was once again denied by Villalobos.
Melvin Cartagena hit a long-range stunner in the 53’ to place Águila in the lead.
Dixon Rivas scored the second goal of the evening to secure the win for the hosts in the 90’+4, sending the ball to the back of the net with a grounded finish to the near post from outside the box.
Águila will close the group stage at Club Atlético Independiente on August 29 in Panama City, Panama, seeking to seal its quarterfinals berth.
Olimpia will also strive to advance to the knockout round when the team faces Antigua GFC on August 29 in Tegucigalpa.
