Boothroyd has been living with the condition for three years after being diagnosed during a routine LMA health assessment
Former Watford and England Under-21 boss Aidy Boothroyd has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
In an emotional video, Boothroyd revealed he has been living with the disease for the past three years but has only now decided to go public.
The 54-year-old said the initial news came as a “massive shock”, with the condition having been detected during what was expected to be a routine annual health assessment laid on by the League Managers’ Association (LMA).
“It has taken me time to feel ready to share my diagnosis, and I have found it difficult not being completely open with people,” Boothroyd said. “Personally, my passion and love for coaching is as strong as ever, I am focusing on keeping physically fit, which is key to slowing down the progression of Parkinson’s.
“I am ready to start the next chapter in my life. I would like to thank the LMA and Parkinson’s UK for their support.”
Boothroyd made his name as a young coach at Watford, leading the Hornets into the Premier League via the Championship play-offs in 2006.
He also managed Colchester, Coventry and Northampton before joining the Football Association (FA) to work with England’s age-group sides.
He eventually took charge of the U21s in 2016, replacing Gareth Southgate when he was promoted to the senior job, and served for five years, reaching the semi-finals of the European Championship in 2017 and winning the prestigious Toulon Tournament 12 months later.
He last managed Jamshedpur FC in India, but left that job in the summer of 2023.
“Aidy has displayed incredible positivity, resolve and determination since his Parkinson’s diagnosis three years ago,” said LMA chief Richard Bevan. “His passion for football and people drives him on and he continues to play an active role in the LMA, as an almost ever-present senior member at our events and educational sessions.
“We care deeply for all our members, and Aidy’s attitude since his diagnosis has been an inspiration to our entire team as we continue to support him and his family throughout this unexpected and challenging time.”
