Bruno Varela’s future at Ajax hangs in the balance as the Dutch side continue to hedge their bets on the goalkeeper.

The 25-year-old former Portugal U23 international is currently on loan in Amsterdam from Benfica.

According to Portuguese outlet Record, Ajax have until May 15 to take up their option to sign him on a permanent deal for €5m.

It was expected that first-choice stopper André Onana would leave the defending Eredivisie champions at the end of this campaign.

However, with the transfer market jolted by the possible economic after-effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, the prospect of Onana staying put has increased.

Record reports that if leagues across Europe remain suspended much longer, it is possible the two clubs could agree to give Ajax more time to make a call on Varela.
