GUATEMALA CITY – LD Alajuelense won 2-1 against Comunicaciones in the first leg of their quarterfinal’s series in the 2024 Concacaf Central American Cup on Thursday at Estadio Cementos Progreso in Guatemala City, Guatemala.
Comunicaciones took an early lead in the 3’, with Carlos Mejía scoring from a close-range finish inside the penalty area.
Diego Campos equalized for Alajuelense in the 52’ to increase his tournament-leading tally to six goals. Celso Borges supplied the assist from the right wing.
The visitors completed the comeback in the 55’, as Alberto Toril capitalized on a cross from Anderson Cardoso with a towering header to send the ball to the back of the net.
Two saves in succession from Alajuelense goalkeeper Leonel Moreira in the 77’ and 78’ prevented Comunicaciones from tying the score.
Alajuelense extended its impressive record in the CCAC, now boasting an unbeaten record across 15 matches.
Comunicaciones and Alajuelense will meet in the second leg next Thursday in Costa Rica. The winner, on aggregate, will advance to the semifinals and earn a berth in the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup.
