Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 17 games

Article image:Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 17 games

A solid defensive performance earned Carlos Corberán’s team a ninth draw of the season and an eighth clean sheet and extended their unbeaten run to nine games, but results elsewhere means that the Baggies have dropped out of the top six.

No Albion side has drawn more than nine of their first seventeen games of the season, and the only other season it has been matched was in 1999/2000 under Brian Little. A fifth goalless draw in seventeen games is a new club record; no Albion team had more than four at this stage of the season and the last team to do that was Ron Atkinson’s team in 1979/80.

This season’s team are just one goal above the club record for the fewest goals conceded in the first seventeen games. The 1905 and 1948 teams had let in only ten goals at this stage. Gary Megson’s famously solid promotion teams in 2001 and 2003 had let in sixteen goals by this stage of the season.

Eight clean sheets from from the first seventeen games has only been bettered by two previous Albion teams – John GIles’ 1975/76 team had nine at this stage while Jack Smith’s 1948/49 team had ten.

Conversely, this season’s goals scored tally of eighteen is the lowest by a second tier Baggies team since 1999.
