Alexandre Lacazette named captain of France’s Olympics squad | OneFootball

By far the most experienced member in the squad, Alexandre Lacazette (33) has been named captain of France’s Olympics team.

Lacazette, who has three goals in 16 appearances for Les Bleus, hasn’t represented his country since November 2017, when he netted a brace against Germany in a friendly. However, the strange dynamics of the Olympic Games competition (only three players above the age of 23) means that he will once again wear the bleu of France.

Not only that, he will also wear the captain’s armband, as he does at club level with Olympique Lyonnais. Lacazette confirmed the news at a press conference, describing the opportunity given to him by manager Thierry Henry as a “one in a lifetime” chance.

Initially, it was thought that Lucas Chevalier would wear the armband, however, Lille OSC refused to allow the goalkeeper to compete in the tournament. As the Olympics fall outside of the FIFA calendar, all clubs have a right to retain their players; many clubs, notably Real Madrid, have exercised that right.
