Alexandre Mendy (30) became the all-time top scorer for SM Caen during the club’s 3-0 victory over FC Martigues on Tuesday evening.
Mendy scored a brace against Ligue 2’s bottom-placed side and outstanding relegation favourites to take his overall goal total with Caen to 70. In the process, he overtook Cyrille Watier who had held the record for the past 19 years with 69 goals.
It had not looked likely over the summer that Mendy would be in a position to surpass the former player as the striker had been keen on an exit to the Championship. It was reported that Mendy had agreed to join Sunderland AFC following a highly successful 2023/24 campaign.
However, his move collapsed in surprising circumstances when it was announced that Kylian Mbappé (25) had bought the Normandy club through his investment firm. The new ownership was unwilling to sanction the departure of last season’s top scorer in Ligue 2 and reneged on the previous owner’s promise to the forward.
