As Liverpool’s players edge closer to securing their first Premier League title since 2020, Alexis Mac Allister has offered an insightful perspective on the team’s most influential figures this season. With the Reds requiring just a draw against Tottenham on Sunday to claim the coveted title, the contributions of key players like Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, and Alisson Becker have been pivotal in the club’s success. Yet, in a recent interview, Mac Allister was asked to rank these three stars, and his thoughtful response sheds light on the immense respect he holds for his teammates.
Since joining Liverpool, Mac Allister has rapidly become an essential part of the team’s midfield. The 26-year-old has played a significant role in Liverpool’s tactical evolution under Arne Slot, and his performances have showcased his growing stature in the Premier League. More than just his on-field presence, Mac Allister is also known for his leadership off the pitch. He is never one to shy away from speaking to the media, offering valuable insights into the team’s dynamics.
In a candid interview with Sky Sports, Mac Allister was tasked with ranking three of Liverpool’s biggest stars – Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, and Alisson Becker – in terms of their importance to the team. Given the standing of these players, it was clear that this would not be an easy task for the Argentine midfielder.
Visibly challenged by the question, Mac Allister offered a smile before admitting, “You’re putting too much pressure on me!” He continued, acknowledging the difficulty of the task due to the varied roles and exceptional qualities of each player. However, Mac Allister made his decision, ultimately ranking the trio from one to three.
In terms of goals and assists, it’s no surprise that Mac Allister placed Mohamed Salah at the top. “Mo is the best here,” he said. Salah’s remarkable consistency in front of goal, coupled with his pivotal contributions to Liverpool’s attack, have made him one of the most influential players in the Premier League.

Following Salah, Mac Allister ranked Alisson Becker second, describing the Brazilian as “one of the best keepers” alongside Thibaut Courtois and Emiliano Martínez. Alisson’s ability to make match-winning saves and his overall composure in goal have been crucial to Liverpool’s title charge.
In third place was Virgil van Dijk, who Mac Allister hailed as “amazing” and the “best centre-back I’ve ever seen.” Despite placing Van Dijk third in this ranking, Mac Allister emphasised that the Dutch defender is “the best in the world right now.” Van Dijk’s leadership, commanding presence, and defensive brilliance have been central to Liverpool’s success over the past few seasons.
Mac Allister’s ranking reflects not just his individual appreciation for these players but also the collective strength of Liverpool’s squad. In his own words, “all of them are legends for this club,” showcasing his deep respect for the contributions of Van Dijk, Salah, and Alisson. While the ranking may have been a difficult decision, it underlines the importance of each player in Liverpool’s pursuit of glory this season.

It’s also worth noting that while Mac Allister’s ranking positions these three players as Liverpool’s top performers, the Argentine midfielder’s own role cannot be understated. His contributions this season have been vital in the Reds’ title race, and as he looks ahead to potentially lifting the Premier League trophy, he is quickly cementing his place among Liverpool’s most valuable players.
In addition to ranking his teammates, Mac Allister was also asked to reflect on the greatest midfielders in Premier League history. When it came to choosing between Liverpool’s iconic Steven Gerrard, Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne, and Chelsea’s Frank Lampard, Mac Allister’s response was equally thoughtful. He placed Gerrard first, citing his complete skillset, leadership, and mental strength. “He had everything,” said Mac Allister, acknowledging the Liverpool legend’s immense influence on the club.
While Mac Allister has much to achieve to match Gerrard’s status at Liverpool, he is on the cusp of a remarkable achievement. As he prepares to potentially lift the Premier League trophy, Mac Allister will secure something even Gerrard could not: a Premier League winner’s medal.
