The Celts remain at the summit of the SPFL table after a convincing 2-0 win over Dundee at Celtic Park tonight (Wednesday).
The visitors weathered the Celtic storm throughout the first half, however the deadlock was broken on the hour mark as Alistair Johnston found the back of the net for the second time this week, following up his goal against Motherwell on Sunday with the opener in tonight’s match.
Reflecting on his goal and on a good night for the Hoops, Johnston shared his delight at contributing to another Celtic victory.
“I’m getting really lucky!”, he said. “I just seem to go in to the six-yard box once or twice a game and it keeps falling to me.
“That one tonight, I didn’t know much about! I was just there and got a toe on it and I think I put their keeper off a bit.
“I think he was expecting it to get through, so finally the size 11 feet come to help me!
“I’m just happy that I could break the deadlock there, get us going in the right direction and get a reward for all the hard work that the guys had put in throughout the match.”
Arne Engels followed up Johnston’s opener by converting from the penalty spot a few moments later after Kyogo was fouled in the box, giving the Celts a firm grip on the match.
Dundee had defended resolutely until that point, however, speaking to Celtic TV after tonight’s match, Johnston credited the work done in the first half for helping to break Dundee down.
He added: “It was a difficult match, we knew it was going to be that.
“Dundee are well organised, they have a lot of talent and physicality but I think throughout the first-half we saw that we were breaking them down.
“In the second half you could tell that all the hard work in the first half had paid off.
“It ended up being a good performance and one of those that we looked at that no matter what happens, you need to get three points, especially with other big matches going on tonight.
“It was just important for us to focus on our work, get the three points, take care of our business and whatever happens, happens.”
