After a strong 3-1 victory against Stoke City, Nottingham Forest cemented the title of FA Women’s National League Cup winners. With the trophy now secured and a league title looking promising, it is a good time to reflect on how the season has shaped up so far for the Reds.
After finishing third last season behind Newcastle United and Burnley, Nottingham Forest rose to the challenge of coming out on top of the National League’s Northern Premier Division in their stride. So far within league fixtures, Forest have secured 13 wins and three draws across 18 games. These results included a win and a draw against Burnley, who finished above them in the previous campaign.
Other particularly notable league results from Forest include a 4-0 victory over Liverpool Feds and a remarkable 9-0 win over Stourbridge.
There are undoubtedly many factors that have contributed to Nottingham Forest’s success so far this season. A key one to focus on, however, is the signing of two new and influential forwards ahead of the 2024/25 season.
Tallying 19 goals and eight assists in 28 appearances, a key signing came in the form of Jamaican international Melissa Johnson from Charlton Athletic. Johnson’s performance during the team’s Cup-winning final also won her Player of the Match, highlighting her significance to the team further.
Another key signing is this season’s top goalscorer so far in Charlie Wellings. The striker was signed by Forest after being released by Reading, following their voluntary demotion to the fifth tier Southern Region Women’s Football League. Wellings has been a key part of Forest’s attack this far this season. Scoring 21 goals across 27 appearances, Wellings is undoubtedly another key addition to the squad that helped Forest claim their FA Women’s National League Cup title.
With the season now drawing to a close, it has been one of great success for Forest already. The only question remaining is whether a league win and promotion is on the cards. It is reasonable to be hopeful that Nottingham Forrest will finish on a high.
With a little more than a month left in the season, Forest have four fixtures remaining. Based on previous results against all four sides they must still face, it would not be presumptuous to say there is minimal threat to their title in their remaining opposition. Having secured strong wins against Hull City, Liverpool Feds, and Stourbridge (4-0, 4-0 and 9-0 respectively) the closest result the team have had from their remaining opposition was a 2-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion. With second place Wolverhampton Wanderers trailing behind on both points and goal difference while having played one further fixture, it is comfortable to say Forest’s victorious season looks set to continue.
With the women’s side looking set for victory and their male counterparts on track to qualify for the Champion’s League for the first time since 1980, it is undoubtedly an excellent season to be a Nottingham Forest supporter.
