Cruz Azul struck late to deny rivals América victory in the latest edition of the Clásico Joven at the Estadio Azteca on Saturday.
Scorers: Aguilera (pen) 41′, Rodríguez (pen) 84′
The hosts took the lead late in the first half of this top-of-the table encounter.
Álvaro Fidalgo was initially booked for a dive in the Cruz Azul area, but that decision was reversed and a spot kick awarded following a VAR review.
The contact looked minimal, but that didn’t stop Emanuel Aguilera from stepping up and making no mistake from 12 yards.
It looked like the Azulcrema were on their way to taking top spot until another highly debatable call in the closing stages.
Again it took a VAR review to punish Mauro Laínez for a very harsh hand ball after the ball appeared to deflect off his boot before catching his trailing hand.
La Máquina striker Jonathan Rodríguez blasted his penalty past the despairing dive of Guillermo Ochoa.
The result means that Cruz Azul maintain their two-point advantage over Las Águilas at the top of the standings, with just two games remaining before the play-offs.
