Central defender Unai Bilbao is set to become América’s first new signing ahead of the 2022 Clausura.
According to TUDN, the Azulcrema have reached agreement in principle with the player and his current club Atlético San Luis.
There are some financial issues to resolve, but the understanding is that the 27-year-old Spaniard will join Santiago Solari’s side next season.
Las Águilas had the joint best defence along with Atlas in the 2021 Apertura, conceding just 10 goals in 17 regular-season games.
However they couldn’t maintain that solidity in the Liguilla, with Pumas able to come to the Estadio Azteca and knock three goals past them in the quarter-final second leg.
América already have three foreign centre-backs on the books in Emanuel Aguilera, Bruno Valdez and Sebastián Cáceres.
Solari is known to be a fan of fellow Argentine Aguilera, which means that Valdez or Cáceres will likely need to shipped out in order for América to abide by the rule governing the amount of non-Mexican players in Liga MX squads.
