Speaking in an interview with L’Équipe du Greg, French youth international midfield talent and current Bayer Leverkusen player Amine Adli discussed the tactical changes that he has experienced this season at club level following the arrival of ex-Real Sociedad B coach and former Liverpool and Bayern Munich defensive midfielder Xabi Alonso as the Bundesliga outfit’s new manager, as well as which is his favourite position on the pitch.

“There is no secret to explain my current success, it’s just hard work. After my two injuries, I had to work a lot to get back to my best level. And then, it’s also a tale of things just clicking. When you are able to be decisive in a match once, you want to be decisive in every game. The Bundesliga is a league that focuses on a very attacking game, very open, with lots of space. With many counter-attacks and one vs one situations, it perfectly matches the profile of French players who are fast, fast and technical players who like to dribble. It’s an advantage (for us) here. I have a level of versatility that allows the coach (Xabi Alonso) to position me anywhere on the pitch. For sure, it’s necessarily easier to focus on a specific position, even if I have no problem with that (being put in different positions from game to game). But I think I’m better on the right wing. It gives me more opportunities to dribble or find shooting positions. But I also feel good in the centre of the pitch.”

Bayer Leverkusen currently sit 6th in the Bundesliga table but are on a 7 game winning streak in all competitions. The points differential between their current league position and the Champions’ League places sits at just 5 points. With 7 matches to play, Alonso and 22-year-old Adli will be hoping that the club can continue this great late season momentum.

Following the receipt of a red card vs Mainz on February 19th and the subsequent suspension, Adli has been averaging a goal or assist every Bundesliga match.
