Andrea Berta is set to become Arsenal’s new sporting director after reaching an agreement with the club. His appointment will mark a major shift in the Gunners’ recruitment strategy as they prepare for a crucial summer transfer window.
Berta’s availability sparked interest from several top clubs, but the 53-year-old prioritised Arsenal. His vast experience in squad-building and player trading made him a standout candidate in the club’s extensive search to replace Edu Gaspar.
Edu resigned in November, leaving Arsenal without a permanent sporting director. The recruitment process was led by managing director Richard Garlick and executive vice-chair Tim Lewis, with input from manager Mikel Arteta. Josh Kroenke also played a role on behalf of the club’s ownership.
During his 12-year spell at Atletico Madrid, Berta played a key role in reshaping the club into a genuine challenger to Barcelona and Real Madrid. Under his guidance, Atletico won two La Liga titles, reached two Champions League finals, and secured multiple domestic and European trophies.
His influence extended beyond on-field success. He was instrumental in Atletico’s transfer strategy, overseeing deals that brought in Antoine Griezmann and Rodri while also negotiating significant departures. The club’s £180m summer spending in 2024 demonstrated his ability to balance squad investment and financial sustainability.
Since Edu’s departure, Jason Ayto has been handling the role on an interim basis. While he was considered for the permanent position, Arsenal ultimately opted for the experience and proven track record of Berta.
Berta’s appointment comes at a defining moment for the club. Arsenal are battling for a Premier League title while also aiming to build a squad capable of sustained success. The upcoming transfer window will be crucial, and Berta’s expertise in navigating high-pressure negotiations will be invaluable.
Edu, Arsenal’s first-ever technical director, was promoted to sporting director in 2022 before resigning late last year.
An official announcement on Berta’s arrival is expected soon. His appointment signals Arsenal’s intent to refine their long-term strategy and compete at the highest level in England and Europe
