Tottenham Hotspur head coach Ange Postecoglou has explained why James Maddison did not play against Leicester City at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
Spurs suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Leicester in North London, as their terrible form in the Premier League continued.
Tottenham have now lost five of their last six league games and are only eight points above the relegation zone.
Maddison is one of Tottenham’s best and most important players, but the England international attacking midfielder did not feature in the match.
Spurs boss Postecoglou has explained the reason why the £40 million (Sky Sports) playmaker did not play against Leicester.
Postecoglou told BBC Sport when asked about Maddison’s absence: “He is just sore after the other night. He wasn’t right to play. We really had no choice.”
The 28-year-old has scored eight goals and given four assists in 15 starts and seven substitute appearances in the Premier League so far this season.
Maddison scored four goals and provided nine assists in 26 starts and two substitute appearances in the league last season.
Postecoglou is a very good manager, but the former Celtic boss needs to sort things out at Tottenham soon.
Leicester have been one of the worst teams in the Premier League this season and could end up back down in the Championship.
To lose to the Foxes at home is embarrassing for Spurs, who are surely not going to get into the Premier League top four.
Tottenham have gone backwards from last season. Fans are not happy at all, and Postecoglou needs to fix the problems soon, especially defensively.
While Tottenham, linked with Brian Brobbey, have scored 46 goals in 23 Premier League games, the North London club have conceded 37 times. That is bad.
Spurs will return to action on Thursday evening when they take on Elfsborg at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the League Stage of the UEFA Europa League.
