Ange Postecoglou says he is resigned to his Tottenham side having to get past Eintracht Frankfurt without help from the "football gods" after they were frustrated in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final against the Bundesliga club.

Pedro Porro's outstanding flicked goal cancelled out Hugo Ekitike's sixth-minute strike to earn Spurs a 1-1 home draw but Postecoglou's side could not find a winner despite a slew of second-half chances.

Lucas Bergvall and Rodrigo Bentancur both struck the crossbar, the former with a stunning strike, while 'keeper Kaua Santos saved from the Uruguayan, Heung-min Son, James Maddison and Micky van de Ven.

"I'm resigned to the fact that the football gods have got their eyes elsewhere this year," Postecoglou said afterwards. "They're obviously busy with other clubs and other managers, so whatever we get we're going to have to do it without them this year.

"A little bit frustrated by the result obviously but I thought the performance in general was really good from the boys.

"We conceded early which was not ideal and it was a fair strike by the lad but I thought our response to that was really good. We stayed in control.

"We scored a good equaliser. We made them work hard in the first half so we knew in the second half, with our ability to break teams open, we would put them under pressure. It is exactly what happened and the boys did everything right. I couldn't ask for anything more from them.

"We hit the crossbar three times, their keeper has made some amazing saves. We had a couple of other good opportunities as well. On any other night we would have a comfortable victory. If we can perform like that over there, and there is no reason why we can't, then we still give ourselves a good chance."

Spurs must now win at Deutsche Bank Park next Thursday to set up a semi-final against Bodo/Glimt or Lazio.

"If we can repeat that next week, and there's no reason we can't, we'll give ourselves a good chance," Postecoglou said.

"I really felt like we overwhelmed them with our football, with our running and with our press. It wasn't just the chances we created but the chances we almost created. It's going to be that sort of season. Nothing is going to come to us easy.

"We're going to have to go there and fight now to get what I thought we deserved tonight and that's what we'll try to do."

Bergvall came closest to a Spurs winner when his swerving long-range effort ricocheted off the crossbar, leading to an intense spell of pressure in which Son and Bentancur also went close.

"He [Bergvall] was great but the whole team was," he said. "I thought Rodri was outstanding. Both full-backs defensively and with the ball were really causing problems. Cuti [Romero] and Micky [van de Ven] handled their front threats really well apart from the goal we conceded which was the only disappointing bit.

"The front three were working with Madders [James Maddison] and were really creative.

"You can’t ask any more from the lads than what the lads did, especially in that second half to create that many chances. We don’t get the win but I can’t ask any more from the players."
