Chivas goalkeeper Antonio Rodríguez voiced his frustration that the Flock will begin the Apertura season with a heavily depleted squad.
Manager Víctor Manuel Vucetich will have to plan without five of his first-team players for Saturday’s clash with Atlético San Luis.
Alexis Vega, Uriel Antuna, Jesús Ricardo Angulo, and Fernando Beltrán are in Tokyo representing Mexico’s U-23 squad in this summer’s Olympics.
Meanwhile Gilberto Sepúlveda is with the El Tri senior side at the Concacaf Gold Cup being held in the USA.
Despite the negative impact of these international absences, Rodríguez does not begrudge his team-mates the experience.
‘Toño’ was a member of the Mexico squad that won Gold at the London Games in 2012.
“These are issues in which we have no voice or vote. We would like everyone to be here, [but] also happy that they are enjoying this stage,” he told a videoconference.
“I was blessed to be there 10 years ago. It marked my life. That’s why I wish you the best. May they win a medal and make it unforgettable.”
Rodríguez has been on the books at Chivas since graduating from the club’s academy in 2011, although he has had four loan spells in the decade that has passed.
