Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez is raring to start in tomorrow’s return to Serie A action against Hellas Verona.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They anticipate that the 27-year-old will start despite just returning from international duty.
Inter captain Martinez has been away with the Argentina national team during the international break.
The Nerazzurri striker started for the Albiceleste in their World Cup qualifier against Peru this week. He scored the winner in a 1-0 victory with an acrobatic overhead kick.
However, as is often the case, Martinez’s international duty means that he made a late return to training for Inter.
The 27-year-old has only been in training for a couple of days.
This raises some questions regarding Martinez’s fitness and sharpness for tomorrow’s match.
Considering the lack of training time as well as the travel from South America, Martinez may not be at his best.
Moreover, Inter coach Simone Inzaghi will have squad rotation on his mind. Inter are making a return into a very intense fixture schedule that sees them play virtually twice per week.
On the other hand, Inter will want to return with a bang against Verona.
There will be other important matches along the way. However, hitting the ground running with three points this weekend will be vital for the Nerazzurri.
The Argentine wants to set the tone for the coming months with a strong performance tomorrow.
Martinez wants to start. And according to the Gazzetta, Inter coach Inzaghi will give him the nod.
There are other striker options such as Mehdi Taremi and Marko Arnautovic. And they’ll get their opportunities over the coming months.
However, it will be Martinez who starts alongside Marcus Thuram tomorrow, reports the Gazzetta.
