Gabriel Martinelli and Mikel Merino scored for Arsenal to bring the game level before full time.

Alexander-Arnold recently confirmed that he would leave the club at the end of the season. His announcement did not sit well with some supporters.

The England international was brought on in the 67th minute and was booed by sections of the home crowd.

Slot admitted the supporters were entitled to their opinion, but insisted he would back the full-back while he remains with the club.

“In general, and in life, the good thing about living in Europe is that everyone can have their opinion,” Slot said. “That’s the same here in Liverpool.

“There were people who were not so happy, there were people who were happy for him. They clapped for him. A few of them booed.”

Slot made it clear that his responsibility is to select players who can help the team win Premier League matches.

“Everyone is entitled to their opinion,” he added. “Towards the end, a few of them got more and more positive. But for me, it’s simple.

“I owe it to the team, to the fans, to play a team that can win a game of football.”

He went on to praise Alexander-Arnold’s impact after coming on as a substitute in the second half.

“Trent showed it because he had two or three incredible balls,” said Slot. “We were so close to winning it, partly because of him.”

Slot also acknowledged the difficulty of the situation but chose to back his player strongly.

“For me, it’s not that difficult,” he said. “And for the fans, they can have the reaction they want.

“I will always back my players, the ones I lead and wear the red shirt.”
