Liverpool suffered a shock 1-0 defeat against Plymouth Argyle at Home Park on Sunday in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
Arne Slot made a host of changes to the starting line-up, and gave chances to young academy talents and fringe players.
Despite making some smart moves in the final quarter of the game, the Reds just couldn’t find the net against a side that are rock bottom in the Championship.
Liverpool suffered a big blow during the game after Joe Gomez, who made a return to the side after a long injury lay-off, couldn’t continue after just eight minutes.
Slot kept Curtis Jones on the bench, but the Reds midfielder was an unused substitute. Jones played in the previous game against Tottenham Hotspur and Slot confirmed that the 24-year-old told him in the morning on Sunday that he hasn’t fully recovered yet.
The Reds boss said after the game: “That was a bit of a blow because Curtis Jones was on the bench, but he came to me this morning and said, ‘I don’t think I am fully recovered yet’ as well after the training session of yesterday.”
With that defeat, Liverpool’s hopes of winning the quadruple is over.
On the flip side, Slot can rest his players properly during the FA Cup weeks going forward, and it could come as a blessing in disguise.
Liverpool will travel to Goodison Park to face Everton in their next Premier League fixture in midweek. Should they win the game, the leaders will go nine points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
Slot will be more concerned with his player’s fitness. Jones should be able to recover fully ahead of the midweek fixture, but Trent Alexander-Arnold probably still needs more time.
The Reds boss didn’t use Conor Bradley against Plymouth which is an indication that he will be used against Everton on Wednesday night.
