Arsenal 1 Newcastle 0 – Sunday 18 May 4.30pm
Instant fan / writer reaction from some of our regular contributors on The Mag.
‘The first half performance wasn’t enough for us to avoid defeat today. We should have been in the lead but went in 0-0.
Second half a different game, we had given so much first half and Arsenal upped their game.
One goal in it from a good shot, I don’t think we deserved to lose and had it not been for MOTM Raya we could have had something out of this game.
So, on to the final game, thankfully back at home with it still in our hands, we’d have taken that a few weeks ago.’
David Punton:
‘A frustrating day, albeit a tough place to go.
With Isak missing and Gordon misfiring the goals have dried up.
Yet there was still a sense we ought to have got something here.
It seemed destined that this Champions League race would go to the wire.
So we go to the final day and have to go again against resurgent Everton. It’s in our hands.
The Toon roller coaster has one final lap to run.’
Billy Miller:
‘Would have loved to beat this lot four times this season and stolen the march on second spot.
We were by far the better side in the first half and I don’t think there was much in it after the break.
The fact Raya was man of the match tells a story.
One moment and clinical finish was the difference.
Everything goes to the last day of the season.’
Mark Jankowski:
‘A dominant first half performance wasn’t capitalised upon, David Raya putting in one of his best performances of the season (if you ignore his kicking).
Chances came and went with such alarming regularity that you felt we may regret them as the game wore on.
Unfortunately, a more determined Arsenal performance in the second half saw Anthony Gordon try to overplay in his own half only to cede possession and allow Rice to sweep home an assured finish past Pope.
Newcastle did push towards the end of the game but couldn’t fashion the chance we needed to take what would have been a deserved point from the game.
It doesn’t change much for our Champions League fate.
Win on the final day and we’re in!’
Matt Busby said to Joe Harvey…:
‘We should have won that.
Expected goals tells the real story, with their keeper MOTM.
Second half was poor in comparison to the first.
Our bench is of course, lightweight, to say the least.
Big, big match next week but what an incentive to win it!’
Tony Mallabar:
‘Three out of four but that hurt.’
