Arsenal have become the first team to submit a formal offer for Sporting CP forward Viktor Gyokeres.

Gyokeres is one of Europe’s most coveted players ahead of the summer transfer window. The Swedish striker has scored 95 goals in 99 appearances across all competitions for Sporting, including 52 goals during the current campaign.

The current leader for the European Golden Shoe, his performances have attracted interest from clubs across the continent.

Arsenal have made the signing of an out-and-out number nine their priority and recently-appointed sporting director Andrea Berta is understood to be a huge admirer.

Spanish outlet El Nacional claim Arsenal have become the first team to submit a formal offer for Gyokeres.

The Gunners have tabled an offer of €60m (£51.1m) for the forward, a figure that falls below Sporting’s valuation. While the Portuguese champions are prepared to let their leading scorer leave for less than his €100m (£85.2m) release clause, Sporting will not rush into a decision amid considerable interest.

Manchester United also want to sign Gyokeres, who worked with head coach Ruben Amorim at The Estádio José Alvalade.

However, the Red Devils’ ability to sign Gyokeres could hinge on Champions League qualification. United must win the Europa League in order to reach next season’s competition and face Athletic Bilbao in the second leg of their semi-final on Thursday. Amorim’s side lead 3-0 from the first leg in Spain.

Coventry City will be keeping a close eye on developments, with the Sky Blues retaining a sell-on clause. Coventry will be entitled to 10% of any profit that Sporting make on their £20m investment to sign Gyokeres in 2023.
