Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Kai Havertz is set to return for Arsenal this weekend, after missing the win at Brentford through illness.
The German sat out the 3-1 win over the Bees on New Year’s Day but is available to feature at Brighton this weekend.
His return is a welcome boost for Arsenal, who are seeking a fifth consecutive win in all competitions. Havertz is Arsenal’s leading scorer this season with 12 goals in all competitions.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Arteta was asked whether Havertz would be in the squad: “I think so, yes. The ones with illness, I think are going to be OK. They will train today and if everybody is fine then they will be available.”
Arteta also revealed that Raheem Sterling is stepping up his recovery. The winger’s knee issue is not as bad as first feared and the 30-year-old is back on the grass. However, Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu remain out.
“He (Sterling) is starting to do some stuff on the pitch so that is great news. Let’s see how he progresses next week and we will see if he is available for the following week.
“Ben is still a few weeks away and Tomi has done some stuff on the pitch but we have to see. It has been a long-term injury and we have to see how quick he progresses and how he reacts.”
