Arsenal kicked off the new Premier League season with a routine win over Wolves, and saw their injury worries ease in the process.

Jurrien Timber has endured a torrid time of it since moving to the Gunners last summer, missing most of debut season due to a serious knee injury picked up on his debut which has seen his workload managed since.

But, as the Gunners ran out 2-0 winners at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, Timber came off the bench to see out the game.

It would have been a welcome sight for Mikel Arteta, who still have three first-team squad members working their way back to fitness.

Fabio Vieira

Fabio Vieira has returned to training as he works on his match fitness after picking up a hip injury during pre-season.

The young midfielder missed 20 games through injury last season, but looked to be getting back to match sharpness before sitting out the visit of Lyon earlier in August.

Vieira was able to join his team-mates in training last week, but ruled out of the win over Wolves to kickstart the Gunners’ Premier League campaign.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the game, Arteta was positive on Vieira’s progress, telling reporters: "We have checked him now after training to see how he is but he looked to adapt to it.”

Potential return date: August 2024

Takehiro Tomiyasu

Defender Tomiyasu is another who has struggled with fitness in recent months, and is currently nursing a knee injury.

Speaking after the win over Lyon, Arteta ruled the Japan international out until next month at the earliest, telling reporters: “I think it will take weeks on that one, unfortunately, and poor Tomi because of everything that he does.

“But he’s going to have to be patient and work through it because I think it’s going to take a few weeks.”

Asked for an update last week, Arteta reiterated that Tomiyasu is still “a few weeks” away from first-team action.

Potential return date: September/October 2024

Kieran Tierney

Tierney’s future at Arsenal appears bleak, having been shipped out on loan to Real Sociedad last season and returning after Euro 2024 with a hamstring injury.

Amid speculation linking Tierney with another move this summer, Arteta wants the left-back to focus on his fitness.

He told reporters last week: "He needs to focus on recovering in the best possible way, it’s been a tough time for him again with the last injury. We have to try to support him and make sure he gets back fit."
