Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori feels that Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni is currently the best Italian defender.
The 22-year-old spoke to the Instagram account of Sky Sports UK. He was full of praise for the Nerazzurri defender and his Italian international teammate Bastoni.
At the Euros last summer, Calafiori and Bastoni formed a formidable partnership at the back for Italy.
The Azzurri may have had a disappointing tournament in the end. They went out to Switzerland at the round of sixteen, with Calafiori suspended.
However, the defending of Calafiori and Bastoni in the group stage was excellent. Both individually and as a pair.
Calafiori broke out last season with Bologna. His form for the Rossoblu earned him a big money move to Arsenal.
Meanwhile, Bastoni has been starring for Inter for a number of seasons now.
That has made the 25-year-old something of a leader both for the Nerazzurri and for the national team.
There are plenty of other quality Italian defenders.
From experienced veterans like Inter’s Francesco Acerbi to younger players like Atalanta’s Giorgio Scalvini and Napoli’s Alessandro Buongiorno, there is plenty of competition in the national team,
Arsenal defender Calafiori was asked who he considers the top Italian defender. Other than himself, of course.
And the 22-year-old former Bologna and Roma defender replied, “I would say Bastoni, of Inter Milan.”
