Arsenal midfielder Fabio Vieira is in a rich vein of form for loan club FC Porto, and he kept that going with another goal against AVS Futebol on Saturday.

Vieira looked sharp from the off, forcing a good save out of Mexico international Guillermo Ochoa in the fourth minute. Rodrigo Mora then gave Porto the lead with a close-range finish 14 minutes later.

Vieira was again denied a goal contribution in the 38th minute, as his excellent cross was headed against the post by Samu Omorodion. The loanee curled a shot of his own just past the upright five minutes later.

But Vieira ended up scoring from the hardest chance of the lot, picking a volley out of the air in emphatic fashion for 2-0 in the 61st minute.

That was how the game ended, giving Porto a much-needed win after some inconsistent form recently. The team remain in third in the Liga Portugal, nine points behind leaders Sporting CP.

As for Vieira, he now has goals in three consecutive league appearances and goal contributions in his last five Porto matches in all competitions (three goals, two assists).

Over the course of the season, Vieira’s five goals have him just two goals off his best-ever tally, when he scored seven for Porto in 2021/22. That was the form that prompted Arsenal to sign him in the first place.

The bad news is that Sporting (first), Benfica (second), and Braga (fourth) all also won at the weekend. So both the title race and the race for European football remain the same as before.

Porto are next in action after the international break, when they’ll travel away to Estoril Praia. Vieira hasn’t been named in the Portugal squad for the break, unlike fellow Arsenal loanee Nuno Tavares, so he’ll remain with Porto for the coming fortnight.
